In a significant move, the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government on Wednesday cleared the Food Security ordinance during a meeting of the Union Cabinet.
Even after the ordinance is cleared, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha will need to approve the Food Security Bill.
The Union Cabinet last month had deferred the decision on the Food Security Bill.
The ordinance was promulgated just weeks before the Monsoon Session of the Indian Parliament begins.
In the last session of parliament, owing to frequent adjournments, some important bills including the Food Security Bill, could not be passed as the session ended two days ahead of its scheduled conclusion.
