New Delhi, Feb 26 (IBNS) The sports ministry cleared the men hockey team's trip to Sultan Azlan Shah Cup overruling its nodal agency Sports Authority of Inda (SAI) that has refused to bear the travel expenditure citing budget issues.
SAI DG Gopal Krishan has refused to clear the airfare of the team, citing inflated budget.
SAI said that it has crossed its allocated budget of Rs.5.94 crores for hockey and had spent Rs.11.27 crores.
The case was referred to the sports ministry and secretary sports Pradip Kumar Deb had cleared it.
"I have cleared the trip but we have warned Hockey India not to cross the budget in future," said Deb.
India, who won the Azlan Shah Cup five times (1985, 1991, 1995, 2009, 2010), were the bronze medallist in the last edition of tournament.
India had opted to field a young, new-look squad under Danish Mujataba for this year´s Azlan Shah Cup to be held in Ipoh, Malaysia from March 9 to 17.
Besides India, the other participating nations in this year´s Azlan Shah Cup are arch-rivals Pakistan, Australia, South Korea, New Zealand and hosts Malaysia.
