Guj polls: Modi files nomination papers

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Friday filed his nomination papers for the upcoming state Assembly polls from Maninagar assembly constituency in Ahmedabad.

Minutes before filing the nomination papers, Modi launched his new motto-Vikas, Vishwaas, and Vijay (Development, Trust, and Victory).

Addressing his supporters, the senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said: "We are going to fight the polls on the basis of development and not on the basis of vote-bank politics."

He said Congress will not be able to win the polls by only spending money on poll campaign.

Meanwhile, the Congress has fielded Shweta Bhatt, wife of suspended Gujarat IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt, to contest against Modi from Maninagar assembly constituency.

Shweta Bhatt on the same day filed her nomination papers.

Speaking to media, Shweta Bhatt said: "I am going to fight against Modi from Maninagar on a Congress ticket."

Pertinently, Maninagar is a seat from where the Gujarat chief Minister won by a huge margin in 2007.

The BJP criticised Sanjiv Bhatt on the issue.

"Sanjiv Bhatt´s so called fight has been exposed. It was not a legal fight. He was actually fighting on behalf of the Congress," BJP Mahila Morcha president Smriti Irani told media.

She said: "I feel that Sanjiv Bhatt´s acts have been exposed in front of Indian citizens."

"He was against Narendra Modi as he was motivated by political greed," Irani said.

The IPS officer was suspended after he took on Modi, accusing him of asking the police to go slow on Hindus during the 2002 riots that killed 1,200.

He was also arrested by Gujarat police for ´trying to create evidence against Modi´.

Modi is looking at a third consecutive term as Gujarat Chief Minister.

Voting will take place in Gujarat on Dec 13 and 17. The votes will be counted on Dec 20.
