Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Arjun Modhwadia on Thursday took moral responsibility for the party's defeat in the Gujarat assembly polls and resigned from his position.

Modhwadia has sent his resignation letter to party president Sonia Gandhi, party sources said.

The Gujarat Congress president received a jolt on Thursday when he was defeated by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Babu Bokhiria in Porbandar constituency.

Babu defeated Modhwadia by a margin of 17,146 votes.

Pertinently, Modhwadia was seeking third consecutive term from Porbandar constituency.

The BJP under the leadership of Chief Minister Narendra Modi won the assembly polls in Gujarat as supporters celebrated the victory across the state on Thursday.

Modi, who himself won from the Maninagar seat beating his Congress challenger Shwetha Bhatt, wife of the anti-Modi IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt, is all set to rule the western state for the third consecutive term.

Expressing his happiness over his party´s positive result in the polls, Modi tweeted: "No need of looking behind, FORWARD! We want infinite energy, infinite courage, infinite patience."

In the 182-seat Gujarat, BJP has won 116 seats while the Congress has clinched 60 seats.

Keshubhai Patel´s Gujarat Parivartan Party won 2 seats while others parties got 4 seats till results were showing at around 4:45 pm.

Gujarat witnessed two-phased polls on Dec 13 and 17.
