Gun For Glory: UP tops medals tally

Pune, Aug 8 (IBNS) Uttar Pradesh shooter Aayushi Gupta threw the women's rifle event open when she fired world class score of 396 in her qualification round to make it to the women's 10m air rifle final pushing two-time Olympian Anjali Bhagwat to fourth position in the Gun For Glory Shooting championship at the Balewadi Ranges here on Monday.

Aayushi, who had got past 392 only once, was a revelation as she opened with a 99 and then fired perfect 100 before letting out another 99 and closed in her series with a 98 to sneak ahead of Anjali in third position by virtue of her 30 inner 10s as against 29 by Anjali.

In the finals slated on Tuesday, it will be livewire action as inform Suma Shirur, who posted 397 on the opening day of ISSF ranking event, and Priya Agarwal take on Aayushi and Anjali.

The men's 10m air rifle event also saw slight upheaval as Parmendra Kumar of Army leapfrogged to the top of the heap after Aribam Dicky Sharma had held the position for two days. Parmendra too shot 593 as does Aribam had, but he had 43 bulls eyes to 40 of Aribam. Also, Parmendra shot two perfect rounds of 100s, and a 99 and three 98s.

Maharashtra shooters Ramesh Mali and Fulchand Bangar were the only civilians in the final of men's air rifle that otherwise should see a battle between Army and Navy shooters.

In the pistol events, there was no such upheaval as those who had their qualification rounds on Monday failed to get into the top eight, that make it to the final.

The 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games' 'best athlete', Samresh Jung was still out of touch with his scores as he managed 369, four shots behind Vijay Kumar SM of Army, the last shooter to make it to the 8-man final.

UP steal show from Maharashtra:

Uttar Pradesh topped the medals tally with five gold, three silver and one bronze medal besting the home shooters by one extra yellow metal. By numbers though State collected 10 medals as against nine by Uttar Pradesh, but it was Neha Tokas of Delhi whose three medals alone pushed the National capital state to the third in the tally.
