Guwahati molestation: 11 convicted by court

Eleven people accused in the sensational molestation case in Guwahati on July 9, were convicted by a local court on Friday.

Kamrup district Chief Judicial Magistrate, SP Maitra convicted 11 persons including prime accused Amar Jyoti Kalita while four others were acquitted.

The court convicted Amar Jyoti Kalita, Dipak Deb, Rubul Ali, Sikandar Basfor, Nabajyoti Baruah, Debo Das, Rup Kanta Kalita, Ghanashyam Mallik, Puspendra Das, Nabajyoti Deka and Dhanraj Basfor under sections 143/341/323/354 of the Indian Penal Code.

The court also acquitted Hafijuddin, Jitumoni Deka, Diganta Basumatary and Journalist Gaurav Jyoti Neog.

Sixteen people were taken into custody, but one of them was a minor and his case was being heard in the Juvenile Justice Court.

The Court had examined 24 witnesses during the trial.

The convicts were sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for 6 months with a fine of Rs 500 each, i/d, to rigorous Imprisonment for 15 days each U/S 143 of the IPC, to a fine of Rs 500 each, i/d, to S.I. for 7 days each U/S 341 IPC, to rigorous Imprisonment for 1 year each U/S 323 IPC and to rigorous Imprisonment for 2 years each with fine of Rs. 2000 each, i/d, to R.I for 2 months each, U/S 354 IPC.

A teenage girl was molested by a group outside of a bar at G S Road in Guwahati on Jul 9 and the incident was telecast on various news channels and uploaded on video sharing site YouTube.

Under immense pressure following the incident, Guwahati city police had registered a case and arrested the 16 accused people.
