Haiti cops search for man seen with gun near pres

-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — A police chief in Haiti says detectives are looking for a man who may have wanted to assassinate President Michel Martelly when he visited a northern city over the weekend.

Police Director Joany Caneus says witnesses have told investigators that a man was seen carrying a rifle in a crowd when Martelly walked through the streets of Cap-Haitien on Sunday to promote tourism.

No shots were fired at Martelly, but protesters in the crowd began throwing soda bottles and stocks at the new leader and his entourage. Martelly was not injured.

Caneus says police have since arrested 32 people and taken them to Port-au-Prince for questioning about the stoning.

Caneus is director of police for Haiti's northern region.
