Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) leader and MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi was arrested on Tuesday for his hate speech at a rally last month.

His arrest followed his medical tests at a government hospital here after his return from London, media reports said.

Owaisi underwent medical tests at Gandhi Hospital since morning as the police wanted to determine whether he was well enough to be quizzed in connection to the hate speech cases filed against him.

A police team took him to Gandhi Hospital from his residence.

A team of doctors, including a cardiologist, orthopedician and general surgeon, examined Owaisi.

According to his medical report, the leader has adhesions, hernia in the abdomen and a bullet in right thigh that is putting pressure on sciatic nerve.

The MIM leader´s supporters earlier in the day attacked several vehicles outside the hospital, reports said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday slammed the Andhra Pradesh government for not taking instant action against the MIM leader.

Speaking to media, BJP spokesperson Balbir Punj said: "Somewhere, the Andhra Pradesh Government and the Owaisi clan, they are mixed up. It is a fixed match."

"Owaisi has made a highly criminal and an anti-national speech. Any serious government would arrest right at the time he stepped out of aircraft and would not have allowed the crowd there," he said.

Police on Monday went to Owaisi´s residence to question him over the purported hate speeches.

The police arrived at his residence with a team of government doctors after the controversial politician sought four days to appear before the police for allegedly making inflammatory speeches, media reports said.

Owaisi has been booked in three different "hate speech" cases and was asked to appear before the police on Monday.

The Andhra Pradesh leader returned from London on the same day and was greeted by a large number of his supporters.

He was in London for treatment of intestinal injuries that he had suffered when he was attacked by rivals over a land dispute.

On Saturday, Akbaruddin´s brother and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi told NDTV that Akbaruddin would surrender once he returned from London.

"My brother will not run away from the law," he said.
