New Delhi, Apr 20 (IBNS) Vice President Hamid Ansari on Saturday said he is outraged at the brutal rape and mutilation of a five-year-old girl in New Delhi.

In a statement, Ansari said: "I am deeply saddened and outraged at the brutal rape of the 5-year old child in Delhi. My thoughts and prayers are for a speedy recovery of the child. We must ensure that the best possible medical treatment is provided to the little one."

"Apart from bringing the perpetrator of this heinous crime to justice expeditiously, it is critical for all of us to reflect on why these barbaric acts keep recurring in our midst. We need to collectively work towards urgently changing the regressive mindset vis-a-vis our womenfolk prevalent in our society.

"Else, our heads would continue to hang in shame and we will lose our right to be called a civilized, progressive society," he said.

The national capital went on a protest mode once again on Saturday against crimes against women after the brutal rape and mutilation of the five-year-old girl even as the police facing anger for their initial inaction in rescuing the victim and browbeating her parents arrested the accused from Bihar on Friday late night.

New Delhi began witnessing the protests that were visible after the brutal gang rape and subsequent death of Nirbhaya, the paramedical student who was subjected to the horror on a bus on Dec 16 last.

Police on Saturday said the 22-year-old man who allegedly raped and mutilated the five-year-old girl by inserting foreign objects in her private parts in New Delhi, triggering widespread outrage, was arrested from Muzaffarpur in Bihar on Friday late night.

The accused has been identified as one Manoj Kumar who tried to escape to his in-law´s place in home state Bihar but was tracked through his mobile phone location.

Doctors at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi treating the girl said she is stable now.
