Heavy security for January 28 polling in Manipur

Imphal: About 350 companies of para-military forces, including state armed forces, would be deployed for the forthcoming assembly elections, Manipur chief electoral officer said today.

P C Lawmkunga told media persons that about 200 companies of para military forces would arrive here on January 10 next and besides this, state armed police would also be deployed.

The state police department, he said, was chalking out plans about the deployment of the forces during the one-day poll on the January 28.

About 17,40,820 voters, including 8,89,497 female voters would exercise their franchise during the polls where they would cast votes at 2357 polling stations spread across valley and hill districts.

Lawmkunga said about 13,000 polling personnel would be used during the polls.

Meanwhile, more than 50 income tax department personnel from the Centre have arrived here to check the polling expenditures of the candidates, official sources said.
