New Delhi/Washington, July 26 (IBNS) US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has congratulated Pranab Mukherjee on his swearing-in as the 13th President of India.
"I want to congratulate President Mukherjee on his swearing-in as the 13th President of India. President Mukherjee has been a strong partner to America and the American people, working throughout his career to deepen our cooperation on a wide range of issues," Clinton said in a statement.
"I look forward to continuing to work with the government and people of India. Together we will build on our shared democratic values, strengthen this relationship even more and create a brighter future for both our people," she said.
In a grand finale to his long political journey from a nondescript village of West Bengal to the power corridors of New Delhi, Congress senior leader and former union minister Pranab Mukherjee took oath as the new President on Wednesday.
On July 19, more than 4000 lawmakers cast their ballots in the Parliament and in state assemblies to elect the next President.
Mukherjee also got the support of political parties which are allies or supporters of UPA but are bitter rivals themselves.
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) led by Mayawati, Samajwadi Party (SP) led by Mulayam Singh Yadav and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by Sharad Pawar, all supported Pranab Mukherjee.
Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee also lent her support at the end after opposing him for weeks.
