Chandigarh, Feb 14 (IANS) Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda Thursday said he would make all possible efforts to get wrestling included in the 2020 Olympic Games.

Saying that he would strive to maintain wrestling in the Olympics, Hooda said the sport was among the initial events when the modern Olympic Games had started.

"Wrestling is part of the 2016 Olympics to be held at Rio De Janeiro (Brazil), and I will take steps to ensure that it remains a part of the future Olympics," Hooda said in Rohtak, 70 km from New Delhi.

The International Olympic Committee's (IOC) executive board Tuesday decided to drop wrestling from its Olympic programme for the 2020 Games to make place for a new sport.

India's wrestling community, including Olympic medal winners Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt, was in a state of shock after the IOC decision.

Dutt, who won a bronze medal in the 2012 London Olympics, belongs to Haryana.

Wrestling, which includes freestyle and Greco-Roman events, has been part of the Olympics since the inaugural modern Olympics in Athens in 1896.
