For centuries, Kannauj, a small but one of the historically oldest towns in India nestled in Central Uttar Pradesh, has been preserving fragrance of nature.
''The itrs (perfumes) prepared here from flowers and herbs have no match any where in the world. But the industry is dying due to lack of government protection and concessions given to chemical perfumes that are harmful,'' says Anoop Kannaujia, a leading manufacturer and distiller of sandal wood oil, Nagar Motha oil, Rooh Khas and other essential oils in Kannauj.
Nearly one-third of the town's 1.5 lakh population is engaged in the Itr distillation, which has grown into a cottage industry.
