New Delhi, Mar 24 (IBNS) For the first time, India clinched a Test series 4-0, beating Australia comprehensively by six wickets in the fourth cricket Test with two days to spare at the fourth cricket Test here Sunday.
India reached 4-158 off 31.2 overs after tea on day three chasing 155 to win. It was India´s best result ever in a home series and they also took revenge of 0-4 thrashing they suffered during the 2011-12 tour Down Under.
The embarrassing series scoreline is also the first time since World Series Cricket ravaged Australia´s playing ranks in 1978/79 that Australia has lost four matches in a Test series. The last time they lost 4-0 was in 1970 against Ali Bacher-led South Africa.
Spinner Nathan Lyon, who bagged career-best 7/94 in the first innings, finished with a match haul of nine wickets including 2-71 in India´s second innings.
Lyon dismissed Virat Kohli (41) and Sachin Tendulkar (1) in consecutive overs and fellow spinner Glenn Maxwell removed debutant Ajinkya Rahane (I) in the following over as India lost three wickets for five runs and were reduced to 128 for four with 27 runs still needed.
However Dhoni (12 not out) and Cheteshwar Pujara (82 not out) steered the home side safely to victory on a turning pitch.
It was an eventful day of Test cricket as 16 fell Sunday in less than a full day´s play for 328 runs.
Australia, who scored 262 in the first innings, were skittled for 164 in 46.3 overs in their second innings. Peter Siddle was last man out for 50 after scoring a career-best 51 in the first innings. It´s the first time a No.9 has made two half-centuries in a Test. He scored 51 in the first innings.
There were flayed tempers as well when Jadeja got rid of Warner (8) in the over after he had removed Maxwell (8).
Jadeja broke into wild celebrations even before the umpire had given Warner out. Jadeja signalled Warner the way back to the pavilion. After the send-off, Dar, who was standing at square leg, cautioned Jadeja. Dar called Tendulkar, who in return spoke to Jadeja.
Earlier in the day, the Indian innings lasted just 13 deliveries before being bowled out for 272 runs in the first innings.
Lyon got rid of Ishant Sharma and Pragyan Ojha in consecutive deliveries and returned with career best 7/94.
