India on Monday paid glowing tributes to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 68th birth anniversary.
Top leaders of the country including President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh paid floral tributes to the late Prime Minister at his memorial Veer Bhumi in New Delhi.
Rajiv´s wife and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi also paid floral tributes at Veer Bhumi.
Rajiv´s daughter Priyanka Vadra and her husband Robert Vadra were present at the occasion and paid homage to the former PM.
Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, Defence Minister A K Antony, Minister of State in the Prime Minister´s (PMO) V Narayanswamy, Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia also paid floral tributes at Veer Bhumi.
Rajiv was assassinated by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE or Tamil Tigers) group on May 21, 1991 at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu during a poll campaign.
Rajiv, the youngest Prime Minister of India who assumed office at the age of 40, is remembered for modernizing India´s telecommunications industry, the education system, expanding science and technology initiatives and improving relations with the United States.
With an objective to keep youths away from terror activities, his death anniversary on May 21 is also observed as Anti-Terrorism Day in India.
