New Delhi, March 23 (IANS) India said Saturday it is ready to extend assistance to relief efforts in Myanmar where clashes between Buddhists and Muslims have led to at least 20 deaths in the past two days.

"We express our profound sorrow at the tragic loss of lives and damage to property reported during the recent incidents of violence in Meiktila in Myanmar. We have been in contact with the concerned Myanmar authorities in Nay Pyi Taw and Mandalay. We have been informed of steps taken to restore normalcy. We are hopeful that communal peace and harmony would prevail.

"India stands ready to extend assistance to relief efforts for those affected by the recent incidents," the external affairs spokesperson said in response to a question on the incidents of violence in Myanmar.
