The Planning Commission has declared that the number of people living below the poverty line has shrunk in both urban and rural areas in the country.
The poverty ratio has declined from 37.2 per cent (2004-05) to 21.9 per cent (2011-12) on account of increase in per capita consumption.
At this rate, India should ideally achieve poverty reduction target by 2015, states a UN report.
