India surrendered to the Australian attack on Thursday as the home side won the first Test match at Melbourne Cricket Ground by 122 runs, here.
Chasing 292 runs for victory India kept on losing wickets at regular intervals to bundle up at 169 runs in their seconds innings.
SR Tendulkar remained the highest scorer in the innings with his 32 runs.
G Gambhir (13), V Sehwag (7), R Dravid (10), VVS Laxman (1), V Kohli (0) and MS Dhoni (23) looked helpless in front of the young Australian brigade.
R Ashwin scored another hopeful innings of 30 runs with the willow.U Yadav chipped in 21 runs on the fourth day of the match.
Pattinson remained the pick of the Australian bowler as he picked up four wicket in the match while Siddle scalped three wickets.
Earlier, the Australian second innings ended at 240 runs. M Hussey scored gutsy 89 runs to help the home team take a handsome lead in the match.
Young U Yadav scalped four wickets in the match and remained the pick of the Indian bowlers while Z Khan took three wickets.
Australia had scored 333 runs in the first innings while India made 282 runs for the loss of all wickets in reply of it.
The home side took a 1-0 lead in the four match Test series after winning the first match in just four days.
J Pattinson was named the ´Man of the Match´.
Australian skipper M. Clarke said after the match: "Our tail were outstanding with their batting, and we have to give full credit to the bowlers. You always want to have plans against whatever team you play and we were able to execute the plans."
"Credit has to go to Ponting and Hussey as well," he said.
Indian skipper MS Dhoni said: "Bowlers brought us back in to the game. We were short by 50-odd runs in the first innings. Their lower order scored some runs, if we had got them earlier, we would have had 50-60 runs less to chase."
He said that Indian team is known for their ´tentative´ start to a campaign.
"We are known to be tentative starters, I think in the next game we will be slightly better," Dhoni said.
He credit the Australian bowling for their accurate bowling in the match that made them win the game quite easily at the end.
