New Delhi, Nov 19 (IANS) India's education system will compete with China and achieve the goals it has set for itself, V. Narayanasamy, Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions in the Prime Minister Office (PMO) said Monday.

"The kind of education we are having and the parameters we are following, India will compete with China and achieve whatever is needed in this country," said Narayanasamy speaking at the 27th Foundation Day of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

He further said that India and China were marching forward in spite of the global recession in the world market and that the western countries had reached a saturation point.

"With the use of technology both countries have become premier nations and are marching ahead and competing with each other," he said.

"A total of 65 percent of the country's population is the youth and that is an important potential," Narayanasamy added.

Established in 1985, IGNOU was set up to provide cost−effective education, especially the poor. It educates over four million students in India and 36 other countries through 21 schools of studies and a network of 67 regional centres, around 3,000 learner support centres and 67 overseas centres.

The university offers about 490 certificate, diploma, degree and doctoral programmes.
