New York, Jan 29 (IANS) The first Indian apparel trade show here featuring 35 exporters and their Fall/Winter 2013-14 collections is expected to bring more than 300-400 US buyers, including at least 20 brand stores.

Some of the major buyers expected to attend the two-day show inaugurated Monday by Indian AmbassadorNirupama Rao, include Ralph Lauren; Warnaco; Children Place; Lord & Taylor; Under Amour; VF Sportswear; Nautica; Red Cat; and Jones Apparel.

The buyer seller meet is expected to generate substantial spot business and also help cement long term business partnerships for participating exhibitors.

At $3.3 billion, India's export of garments represents one of the important constituents of overall India-US trade.

Inaugurating the show organised by the Apparel Export Promotion Council of India (AEPC), in cooperation with M/S Trade Good, Rao said that Indian textiles represent an unbroken link between India's ancient culture and its modern day life style.

India's Apparel sector has rapidly upgraded its technology and is highly competitive in meeting US market demands in various segments including high fashion and mass consumption, she said.

Following DISHA - Driving Industry towards Sustainable Human Advancement - the Indian apparel industry has implemented an industry-wide measure toward becoming more socially and environmentally responsible, Rao said.

The Indian garments and textiles industry has deep strengths that allow Indian manufactures to meet market demand across 236 product categories of knitted and woven garments, the organisers said.

India is the third largest producer of cotton yarn, the second largest producer of cellulosic yarn, the second largest producer of silk and the fourth largest producer of synthetic fibre.
