The Indian government has issued orders making it compulsory for bureaucrats to clear a performance review after 15 years of service.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, the Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office, V Narayanasamy, explained that the system had been introduced to boost the efficiency of Indian civil servants.

"This is to ensure efficiency which should be there in the performance of the IAS (Indian Administrative Service) officers and also to review their performance. We will conduct two reviews - first after 15 years and then after 25 years. The honourable Prime Minister has signed the orders," said Narayanasamy.

Incompetent bureaucrats will be asked to leave if they fail to clear the performance tests.

Along with IAS officers, the reviews will be carried out on members of the Indian Police Service and other all-India services.

The all-India services include the Indian Revenue Service, the Indian Forest Service, the Indian Information Service and the Indian Custom and Central Excise Service among others. (ANI)
