Mumbai: India can facilitate growth of nuclear power worldwide, particularly in the developing countries, through the use of low enriched Uranium?Thorium fuel cycle, former Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission Anil Kakodkar said on Tuesday.

"It has been shown that following this approach, the proliferation concerns get considerably diminished, while remaining as efficient in terms of utilisation of uranium.

This can be done with the present day reactor technologies and thus can be readily implemented," Kakodkar said accepting the INS Homi Bhabha Lifetime Achievement Award.

The award, carrying a citation and a cash prize of Rs 2.5 lakh was presented to Kakodkar by the Director General of International Atomic Energy Agency Yykiya Amano at the 21st annual conference of the Indian Nuclear Society.

Amano also gave away awards to some of the outstanding scientists and engineers and young scientists from the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) facilities.
