An Indian employed at a kebab shop in Melbourne was reportedly paid on average just 3.30 dollars an hour and owes over 50,000 dollars in unpaid wages.
The Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO), an agency that investigates workplace complaints, claimed the Indian worker was not paid any wages for three months and was then paid a flat rate of only 290 dollars a week.
He usually worked about 70 hours a week over six to seven days preparing food and cleaning, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.
At the time, the worker was in Australia as a dependent on his wife's student visa.
Younus Mohammed and his brother Mahmood Mohammed, who managed the shop, Ali Baba Kebabs and Wraps at Southland Shopping Centre in Cheltenham, could face the court for underpaying the worker 53,090 dollars between April 2008 and May 2009.
The two brothers are accused of breaching five workplace laws and face maximum penalties of up to 6600 dollars each per breach, while the company, Shafi Investments Pty Ltd, which operated the shop, faces maximum penalties of up to 33,000 dollars per breach.
The FWO wants Shafi Investments to back pay the worker, who remains in Australia. (ANI)
