New York: A 57-year old Indian-origin store owner was stabbed to death by an unidentified assailant during a robbery attempt at his shop in Delaware last week.

Hemantkumar Maganlal Chauhan of Newport, Delaware was rushed to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center where he was pronounced dead.

An official of the Newport-Delaware state police told PTI the suspect is a black male who wore dark clothes and had covered his face with a mask to hide his identity. The suspect was armed with a knife.

According to preliminary investigation, the incident occurred last Friday evening as the suspect entered the Penn Bantam Market, a store owned by Chauhan, armed with a knife.

He vaulted the sales counter and confronted Chauhan, demanding money from the cash register.

A physical struggle ensued between Chauhan and the suspect, who stabbed him in the chest with the knife.

The assailant then fled from the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The Delaware State Police's homicide detectives are continuing their investigation by conducting interviews, reviewing video surveillance and collecting evidence at the scene, attempting to identify the suspect.
