Manipur has various insurgent groups fighting against the government for sovereign or separate homelands. Now, a secondary conflict has arisen out of tensions between various tribal sub-groups due to peculiar patterns of land
tenure and distribution system in Manipur.

People's Liberation Army (PLA)
Year of formation: 1978
Aim: To create a revolutionary front covering the entire North-east and unite all ethnic groups, including the Meiteis, Kukis and Nagas, to liberate Manipur.

United National Liberation Front (UNLF)
Year of formation: 1964
Aim: To achieve independence and a socialist Manipur. In 1990, it launched an armed struggle for 'liberation'.

People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK)
Year of formation: 1977
Aim: Expulsion of 'outsiders' from the state. The group became dormant after its leader Tulachandra was killed in an encounter in 1986.
