Bangalore: IT bellwether company Infosys has discarded, for the time being, fears of a global recession to celebrate the induction of the 1,00,000th employee amid its posting a decent 30.20 per cent net profit for the second quarter of this fiscal.

"Crossing the number of 100,000 employees is a seminal event in the history of Infosys," declared the company's chief mentor Narayana Murthy, considered India's software icon.

The second quarter (July-September 2008) saw a gross addition of 10,117 employees by Infosys and its subsidiaries, while the net addition stood at 5,927.

The company reiterated on Friday that it would add 25,000 employees on a gross basis in 2008-09.

Murthy said the best part of the milestone is that the jobs created by the company are of top quality and most of the jobs have gone to people who are in their 20s "that I think is more significant."

"This is what every company should do," he said.

"And if we can create these kind of jobs by something like 10,000 companies, then we would have completely solved the problem of unemployment in the country," Murthy said.

Infosys Head - HRD and Education & Research T V Mohandas Pai, said: "We continue to be an employer of choice. Our significant investment in training has enabled us to continuously enrich our human capital."

Senior management of Infosys, including N R Narayana Murthy, Nandan M Nilekani, S Gopalakrishnan, S D Shibulal, T V Mohandas Pai and V Balakrishan, released balloons in the air to mark the occasion.
