On this day 160 years ago the country's first ever passenger train started its journey from Bombay to Thane. Thus the Indian Railways came into being. The Indian Railways is the largest rail network in Asia and the world's second largest under one management. Here is a look at some of the interesting facts about the Indian Railways.
-Indian Railways runs around 11,000 trains everyday, of which 7,000 are passenger trains.
-Of the 13 million passengers served by the Railways' network everyday, majority are unreserved passengers.
