Upset over the menace posed by Maoists, a group of villagers mustered courage to corner a Maoist when he turned up at their village to collect the taxes and ultimately thrashed him to death on Wednesday.

The incident took place at Mandaltoli village under Thethaitanagar Police Station in Simdega sub-division of Gumla district in Jharkhand.

The police Inspector of the Thethaitanagar Police Station said that the incident took place when three Maoists drove down on motorbikes to their hamlet with an objective of extorting levy from a local.

However, the alert villagers nabbed and thrashed a Maoist mercilessly and later killed him although the other two succeeded in escaping from the spot.

"As per the information, these Maoists had gone to collect taxes from a villager and the other fellow villagers became alert and nabbed him. The villagers were so much agitated that they brutally thrashed him leading to death," said Arvind Kumar, Inspector of Police, Thethaitanagar Police Station.

He also mentioned that the dead Maoist has been identified as Ajit Sahu, who was involved in many criminal activities, especially in cases of murder and extortion.

The police clarified that he was the commander of a Maoist unit active in the nearby hilly terrains in the forest range.

He also threw light on Sahu's recent criminal acts. (ANI)
