Jaipur, Jan 17 (IANS) Authorities are working overtime to beautify the Rajasthan capital ahead of a three-day Congress party meeting that starts Friday.

Vendors parked illegally on roads have been removed. And Jaipur is being cleaned up thoroughly, officials said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi are among the hundreds who will attend the 'Chintan Shivir' at the Birla auditorium.

An Urban Development and Housing (UDH) official said encroachment have been removed from Statue Circle, C-Scheme, MI Road and Trimurti Circle and from walled city areas.

He said sanitation work had been undertaken across the city.

"We have removed garbage dumped besides roads. Road dividers have been painted and damaged roads have been repaired. (There will be) uninterrupted electricity supply during the session," the official said.

"We have planned to depute 7,000 policemen to provide security to the PM, Sonia Gandhi and chief ministers of a dozen states," he said.

Police will mount aerial surveillance. Close-circuit cameras have come up near the venue.

Jaipur's residents are unhappy that the city gets a facelift only when VVIPs visit.

They said a lot of money was spent on beatification during the Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas last year. But as soon as the delegates and VVIPs left, the heaps of garbage returned.

"The same is going to happen again," said Rajendra Kachchhawa, a resident of Jaipur's Sodala area.
