New Delhi: Janata Dal (United) leader Shivanand Tiwari on Friday called for an immediate change in the selection procedure of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) chief.

Tiwari said the allegations made by former CBI Director U. S. Mishra are absolutely correct.

"Who doesn't know this fact? And that is why there has been a continuous demand that the appointment procedure of the CBI Director should be changed, a collegium should be formed, and the CBI should be removed from the shackles of the government," said Tiwari.

" These demands are backed by such facts and that people believe that the CBI functions on the directives of the government and hence in many cases the Supreme Court or High Courts directly monitors its investigation. And this allegation is fully correct," he added.

Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Naresh Agarwal, however, criticized the former CBI Director for making such allegations years after his retirement from the post.

"It is unfortunate that when they hold these posts, they do not make such revelations. But once they leave the post, their memory improves and they start levelling such charges," said Agarwal.

" I suggest that a law should be made that the oath of secrecy that these officials take should be for a lifetime. It should not serve as a platform for those who want to enter politics and then they make up such allegations," he added.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav also lashed out at the former CBI Director for making such untoward allegations

"This reflects his cowardice. When he was holding the post, such things were not visible to him. And now he comes up with allegations," he said.

In an explosive claim, former CBI Director U.S. Mishra alleged that he faced pressure while probing the disproportionate assets case against former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati.

He also said that the CBI could face pressure again during the investigation against Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.
