Jharkhand panchayat polls: 59,585 file papers for first phase

Ranchi, Nov 4 (IANS) A total of 59,585 candidates have filed nomination papers for the first phase of panchayat polls in Jharkhand, an official statement said Thursday.

In the first phase, a total 1,348 panchayats of 77 blocks of the state will go to polls Nov 27.

The Jharkhand Election Commission said 59,585 candidates filed nomination papers for the first phase. The filing of nomination papers ended Wednesday.

Jharkhand is holding panchayat polls for the first time after it was carved out from Bihar in November 2000.

The five-phase voting will take place Nov 27, Dec 6, Dec 13, Dec 20 and Dec 24.
