Second Lady Jill Biden has sponsored a nuclear submarine called the USS Delaware to the Navy.

She joined Navy Secretary Ray Mabus to announce that the nation's newest nuclear submarine Delaware will be sponsored by her.

She started 'Joining Forces' with First Lady Michelle Obama in 2011 to help support members of the military and their families.

"As a proud military mom, and a proud Delawarean, I am honored to sponsor the USS Delaware," Biden said in a statement.

"Our men and women in uniform and their families represent the very best of America, and wherever the Delaware goes, it will take with it the strength, resilience, and bravery of military families in Delaware and across the country," she said.

According to Politico, the Delaware, which will be built in Virginia by Huntington Ingalls Industries and General Dynamics, will provide 'enhanced stealth, sophisticated surveillance capabilities and special warfare enhancements that will enable it to meet the Navy's multi-mission requirements,' the Defense Department said.

It will have Tomahawk missiles, and its missions will include anti-submarine, anti-ship and anti-mine warfare.

It will be the seventh U.S. Navy ship to be named USS Delaware. The last was decommissioned in 1923.

"I chose the name Delaware to honor the long-standing relationship between the Navy and our nation's first state," Mabus said.

"It has been too long since there has been a USS Delaware in the fleet and this submarine will remind future deployed service members and state residents of their strong ties and many shared values for decades to come," Mabus added. (ANI)
