Srinagar, Feb 10 (IANS) Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) activists clashed with the police here Friday after they were prevented from taking out a protest march.
Dozens of JKLF protestors assembled in the uptown Maisuma neighbourhood of Srinagar adjacent to Lal Chowk, the historic heart of the city, and began marching towards the headquarters of the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) in the Sonawar locality.
Police used batons and tear smoke shells as protestors pelted stones at contingents of police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force at Maisuma. The protestors also burnt old tyres.
The JKLF had announced a protest march to the UNMOGIP headquarters in the city to mark the death anniversary of JKLF founder Maqbool Bhat, who was hanged in New Delhi's Tihar Jail Feb 11, 1984.
The JKLF has also called for a shutdown across the Kashmir Valley Saturday.
