Jyoti Basu stable; on soft diet

Kolkata: The condition of communist partriarch Jyoti Basu is stable, a spokesman of the hospital where he was admitted yesterday with breathing problem and old age complications said.

The AMRI Hospitals at Salt Lake said he is on soft diet and the leader has spoken to the doctors.

 "The overall condition of Jyoti Basu continues to be stable. The medical board of seven eminent consultants constituted for his treatment is continuously monitoring the condition of of Mr Basu," said the hospital's medical superintendent Debasish Sharma.

He said the medical board met again this morning and were satisfied with the progress of   Basu.

"However, the board decided to conduct a CT Scan of the brain. And after it is being done the findings will guide futher treatment," Sharma said.

Basu became unconscious a couple of times at his residence Saturday and was having breathing troubles, leading to his admission in hospital.  


Several senior political leaders, including Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, visited the hospital yesterday.

Basu completed 95 and turned 96 on July 9.
