"Karna govt shouldn't release Cauvery water"

The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) on Thursday asked the Karnataka government not to release water from Cauvery river to Tamil Nadu as was directed by the Supreme Court.

Speaking to reporters, KPCC president G Parameshwar said: "The government should not release Cauvery water to our neighbour even though it will attract contempt of the apex court order."

Parameshwar said a Congress delegation will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Delhi and give him ´facts´ about the current ´distressing situation´ in the South India state due to problems caused by drought and water shortages.

He made the comments a day after the Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered Karnataka to release 10,000 cusecs of water from Cauvery river to Tamil Nadu.

The apex court directed Karnataka to release the water everyday till Dec 10.

The court asked the Cauvery Monitoring Committee (CMC) to meet on Thursday or Friday to take a decision on water requirements of the two South Indian states.

The apex court´s order will continue till the CMC files its report on the matter.

The case will be next heard on Dec 10.
