Ujjwal Nikam, Special Public Prosecutor in the 26/11 case, on Wednesday expressed his delight over Ajmal Kasab's execution, saying that the hanging had brought curtains down on a long struggle for justice and proved how Pakistan sponsors militancy on Indian soil.

"There are two reasons why I am satisfied with the execution of Kasab. First, Kasab and others had taken the lives of 166 people in Mumbai on 26/11 and injured many and I feel that these innocent people have got justice," said Nikam.

"By following the law of the country, we have proved to the world how militancy is sponsored by Pakistan," he added.

Kasab was hanged at Pune's Yerwada Jail at 7:30 a.m. today after President Pranab Mukherjee rejected his mercy petition. He was buried inside the premises of Yerwada Jail shortly after his execution.

25-year-old Kasab had been lodged in the Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai ever since he was arrested immediately after the attack in 2008. He was convicted and given capital punishment by the trial court on May 6, 2010, which was upheld by the Bombay High Court on February 21, 2011.

The Supreme Court subsequently upheld the sentence on August 29 this year.

Kasab was one of the ten terrorists who travelled to India for the attack. Other nine were killed in the operation. 166 people were killed in the Mumbai terror attack. (ANI)
