The execution of Mohammad Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving gunman from 2008 Mumbai attacks, triggered celebrations across India, with people distributing sweets and bursting crackers.

Kasab was hanged at the Yerawada Prison in Pune early on Wednesday morning.

In Agra, there were impromptu street-side celebrations after news of Kasab's execution spread.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Vijay Joshi said: "Today, we are really happy. Kasab, who conspired to break India, has been hanged. The Constitution of India has so much power that any anti-national or anyone who harms the country is not forgiven. We want that the way Constitution of India paved the way for the hanging of Kasab, in the same way Afzal Guru should also be hanged, there should be an end of anti-nationals."

Bhopal erupted in celebrations, with local leaders expressing their happiness by dancing on the streets and bursting crackers.

Bajrang Dal leader Ramesh said: "The Bajrang Dal has always demanded hanging of Kasab and Afzal Guru. In the last four years, in the entire nation, the Bajrang Dal has demanded this several times. Today, there is an atmosphere of happiness, when Kasab was finally given the death sentence. We will celebrate by distributing sweets and bursting crackers across the country."

Congress leader Harish Rawat said in New Delhi: "Kasab's situation had become a little different. Afzal Guru's case has been going through a process for a long time. But, Kasab's case was extraordinary and the new President should take decision regarding Guru in his own way. People should not lose faith; Guru's hanging will be decided taking into consideration the magnitude of his crime."

Kasab was found guilty on more than 80 charges in May 2010, including murder and waging war on India, and was sentenced to death by hanging. The Supreme Court upheld the sentence on August 29.

It was the first time a capital sentence had been carried out in India since 2004. (ANI)
