Kashmir: Curfew lifted after seven days

The Jammu and Kashmir government on Saturday has finally lifted the curfew and removed the tight security in the state that continued for seven days at a row following the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

However, the security forces would continue to keep an eye on the situation as a separatist group has called for a strike for another two days, said reports

Internet and cable TV services that were suspended by the government to restrict the rumours following the execution have restored their services on Saturday.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday tweeted on the easing of the restrictions saying "

Even these restrictions would not have been necessary if we didn´t have amongst us those determined to create trouble out of this situation. "

He said there was no restriction on people offering Friday prayers in their local mosques.

Guru was hanged at Delhi´s Tihar Jail on February 9. The execution took place at 8 am and he was buried soon after at the jail, where he had been lodged for nearly eight years.

Guru´s execution was initially scheduled for Oct 20, 2006. But it was stayed after Guru´s wife filed a mercy petition with the President.

In December 2001, nine people were killed when five terrorists drove into the Parliament complex and opened fire. All the terrorists were shot dead.

Guru was arrested shortly after the attack and accused of planning it.
