A village sarpanch was shot dead by suspected militants in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district on Friday, police said.
The sarpanch was identified as Habibullah Mir.
The attackers reportedly shot him in the compound of his residence at Sopore town´s Goripora village at around 12.20 pm
The sarpanch was admitted to a sub-district hospital in Sopore where he succumbed to his injuries later, the police said.
The police have registered a case in the matter.
Reacting to the incident, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted: "Another cowardly attack on a Sarpanch. I have no doubt the police will get to the bottom of this one ASAP."
