Kejriwal announces 'Aam Aadmi Party

Social activist turned politician Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday officially announced the name of his political party as Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and said it will challenge existing political outfits.

He said 300 members attended meeting of his political group.

Kejriwal said: "The party´s national council has been formed today."

"Aam Aadmi Party´ will fight elections..It is going to challenge existing parties," Kejriwal said.

Speaking on the vision document, the social activist turned politician said: "We have adopted a vision document which says that we should have swaraj in the country."

He said ´women and children´ will have important place in the party.

Kejriwal said his party´s constitution will be different from others and will have an internal Lokpal.

Raising the pitch of their fight against the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government over their core issue of graft, the name is seen as a dig at the popular "aam aadmi" (common man) motif of the ruling party, reports said.

The name was finalised at a meeting led by Kejriwal and his activist colleague Prashant Bhushan, a Supreme Court lawyer, at a meeting in the Delhi

The meeting was the first of its national council and the members were expected to ratify the name and elect a 30-member national executive.

The party is expected to be officially launched at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Nov 26 however the formalities with the Election Commission could take four-five months before the party is registered, reports said.
