Kerala has been facing the toughest time in nearly a 100 years.
Torrential downpours began hammering Kerala on Aug. 8, more than two months into the annual monsoon season, setting off devastating floods. Out of a total population of about 3.48 crore, more than 54 lakh or one sixth of the population of Kerala, had been directly affected by the floods.
The death toll is currently above 400, and more than 10,00,000 people are packed into relief camps, unsure when they can return to their homes. The economic cost of damages is estimated in billions of dollars.
Water levels have receded in many districts, but survivors face the mammoth task of rebuilding. It begins with clearing out muddy water -- and even crocodiles and snakes -- from homes, shops, and other buildings.
