Khadim's founder passes away

Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Khadim India Limited Satya Prasad Roy Burman passed away on Saturday morning here. He was 83.

Roy Burman died at 11:55 a.m at a private hospital here after battling prolonged illness.

The man who gave the nation the concept of ´Affordable Fashion Footwear´ placed Khadim´s in the history of leather industry of India.

He is survived by his wife Namita Roy Burman, two sons Partha Roy Burman and Siddhartha Roy Burman and two daughters Jayasri Burman Maity & Manjusree Pandey.

Burman, also known as 'Barobabu', strongly believed in blending 'intelligence with imagination' which paved the destiny for Khadim's in the history of leather industry in India, officials said.

KM Khadim & Company was an ordinary footwear shop in Chitpur, Kolkata, one among the hundreds of outlets that dotted Eastern India´s footwear factory before it was bought by Satya Prasad Roy Burman in 1965.

From there started a journey of a success story that is today known as Khadim's.

He left his mark on a large number of small manufacturing units and shoe shops as a father figure, grooming them and promoting entrepreneurship among them. In his words, "More than being a manufacturer, I love to manufacture manufacturers".

Recalling his fascination for shoes, Burman once said, "My elder brother used to own a footwear shop at Dibrugarh during the days of independence. Seeing his imagination being given a fresh lease of creativity into various footwear patterns, influenced my fascination for shoes. Surprisingly and thankfully as well, several hands supported me in my maiden venture and I loved my business all the more."

"He was an institution in himself. His unwavering leadership has earned Khadim's the reputation of being a top notch player in the footwear segment of India. "Besides being a successful businessman, he was a true human being who always prioritized the needs of mankind," said the bereaved son, Siddhartha Roy Burman, Chairman and Managing Director of Khadim´s.
