Sonipat: Haryana's Sarva Khap Jat Panchayat, the umbrella body of khap panchayats across the state, on Saturday did not take a stand on the suggestion of lowering the marriage age for girls to counter rising incidents of rape in the state.
Even though khaps, which have been widely blamed for incidents of honour killings, have no legal sanction but often function like kangaroo courts and issue social diktats that are enforced in the villages.
In a meeting called at Sonipat, 40 kms from Delhi, the council discussed the marriage issue and measures to compel the government into lowering the age bar in order in the state where at least 19 rapes have been reported in the past 30 days.
Representatives of around 100 khaps across the state were expected to attend the meeting to share their opinion and to present their proposals on the issue.
However the Mahapanchayat concluded that the suggestion was "individual in nature" and did not pass any final decision on the matter.
