Eric Crouch can't catch a break in professional football.

The Omaha Nighthawks' quarterback underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a torn meniscus in his knee. The 2001 Heisman Trophy winner from Nebraska was injured last week in the United Football League opener against the Virginia Destroyers.

Crouch said he hopes to play again before the regular season ends Oct. 28. Until then, the Nighthawks' quarterback job falls to either Jeremiah Masoli or Troy Smith, the 2006 Heisman winner from Ohio State.

Crouch was a third-round draft pick of the St. Louis Rams in 2002. He was with three NFL teams but never played a regular-season game and last played in 2006, in the CFL.
