Kolkata: The police on Wednesday said they have arrested 12 people, including prime accused Suhan, in connection to a violence in Kolkata's Garden Reach area where a police sub-inspector was killed.
Suhan has been accused of firing at the cop during the violence at Harimohan Ghose College in Garden Reach area on Tuesday.
The Opposition alleged that Suhan is close to Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor Mohammed Iqbal.
TV footage by local channels claimed Iqbal also attempted to slap a cop.
Meanwhile, the police cracked down on Congress supporters when they tried to protest in Dalhousie area near Bankshall Court on Wednesday.
Congress leader Manas Bhuniya later said there is rule of jungle in West Bengal.
"We were protesting the killing of the cop and it seems even protest marches are banned in Bengal now. This is jungle rule," he said.
On Tuesday, sub-inspector Tapas Choudhury was killed while four other students were injured as clashes between supporters of Chhatra Parishad (CP) and Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) broke out when leaders from both the sides were filing nomination papers for upcoming students’ union election.
TMCP and CP are the student wings of ruling Trinamool Congress and Congress respectively.
