New Delhi/Allahabad, Jan 26 (IBNS) The Indian Air Force (IAF) on Saturday airlifted eight pilgrims, who were severely burnt in the fire that broke out at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh on Friday, to Delhi for medical treatment.

The pilgrims were airlifted to Delhi by IAF's AN-32 (Ambulance modified).

"Eight pilgrims who got severely burnt in the fire that broke out at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Allahabad yesterday and were in a serious condition were airlifted by IAF's AN-32 (Ambulance modified) from Allahabad to Delhi for medical treatment at about 1340 h today," the IAF said in a statement on Saturday.

"They were accompanied by eight attendants and one doctor," it said.

"The IAF immediately pressed into service its AN-32 on requisition of airlift for these eight severely burnt pilgrims by the District Magistrate Allahabad and flew them out to Delhi at about 1215 h, the moment they landed at Allahabad airbase after receiving immediate medical attention," it said.

At least 19 people were injured on Friday when a fire broke out at the Maha Kumbh congregation here.

The fire broke out at a tent in sector 11 of the Maha Kumbh Mela area and gutted another tent, reports said.
