Sri Lankan High Commissioner to India Prasad Kariyawasam on Thursday apologised to the Indian Members of the Parliament (MPs) for his comments on alleged links between Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and Tamil MPs.

Kariyawasam issued an apology after meeting officials of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

The MEA had summoned him for his alleged remarks.

"I would like to apologise to MPs of Tamil Nadu if I have caused any discontent or concern or distress in their minds. I feel sorry about that...I have a great respect for parliamentarians," Kariyawasam told reporters.

Earlier, he was quoted as saying to an Indian daily that India should investigate the MP´s ´sympathetic´ to the Elam issue.

Kariyawasam on Thursday said that he was misquoted by the daily and his comments were put out of context.
