Lawmakers staged a sit-in demonstration outside the Parliament here on Wednesday to press their demand for a Comprehensive Reservation Act for people belonging to the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes communities.

Lawmakers criticized the judiciary and certain bureaucrats for trying to stall the proposal to reckon the SC and ST status in matters of promotion and allied benefits.

Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief Ram Vilas Paswan said it was wrong on the part of the government to deny the constitutional rights to the socially privileged class of SC and ST.

"We demand the government to formulate the Reservation Act, that has already been considered by it. The Bill has been tabled in the house but it is being taken away. It reflects that the government is not honest," said Paswan.

"So, firstly, we want that an Act should be formulated. Secondly, the reservation policy, which has been scrapped in case of promotion (for the scheduled caste and scheduled tribes) should be reviewed and due amendments be incorporated in the Constitution," he added.

Paswan also accused the Bihar Government for scrapping the reservation policy for SC and ST for promotion.

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party (SP) lawmaker Shailendra Kumar Singh hit out at the government officials for trying to eclipse and wipe out the reservation policy.

"This demo is organised by lawmakers of both the lower and upper house of the Parliament. They are demanding that it is an attempt to knock down the reservation vis-…-vis promotion. The judiciary and officials of certain departments in the government are trying to abolish this reservation," said Singh.

Singh further said this matter should be brought forward in both the Houses of Parliament.

"Today, all the lawmakers of both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha of the Parliament have come forward. We would bring this matter in both Houses of Parliament through an adjournment motion, so that a Bill for Comprehensive Reservation Act is enacted," said Singh.

"Those, who are socially and economically backward would become secure and should not get afraid of any body," he added.

Several lawmakers stood in front of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi's statue and raised their voice as part of their demonstration.

They held placards reading, 'We Want Reservation Act' and 'We Want Comprehensive Reservation Act'. (ANI)
