Leading NY horse trainer Pete Ferriola dies at 69

Pete Ferriola, the leading thoroughbred trainer in New York in 1987, 1991 and 1992, died Friday. He was 69

The New York Racing Association said he died in Spring Hill, Fla., from complications of a stroke and chronic diabetes.

Ferriola was nicknamed "Pistol Pete" and from 1978 to 2001 he won nine titles at Aqueduct and two at Belmont Park. He retired with 1,129 wins and more than $26 million in career earnings.
