Six people accused in the robbery and gang-rape of a 39-year-old Swiss tourist in Datia district of Madhya Pradesh (MP) have been sentenced to life imprisonment.
A 100-page chargesheet was filed by the Datia police against the six accused in the case that went to trial in March.
The accused were identified as Kanjar Baba (20), Bhutha (25), Rampro (25), Gaza alias Brijesh (25) Vishnu (25) and Nitin Kumar.
Four of the six people, all of whom are residents of Kanjar Tola settlement in Jharia village, were charged with rape. The other two were booked with robbery and assaulting the woman and her husband.
The Swiss woman and her husband were going from Orchha in Madhya Pradesh to Agra in Uttar Pradesh by cycle when the incident occurred at around 9 pm on Mar 15.
The couple reportedly came to India for adventure tourism.
The accused thrashed the victim´s husband before gang-raping her.
They also robbed their belongings which included cash, laptop, torches, camera and mobile phones, the police said.
Her husband told the police that four accused gang-raped his wife while others held them.
The police took the woman to a hospital in Gwalior where her medical examination confirmed that she was gang-raped.
The police had to file the chargesheet without conducting the test identification parade (TIP) of the accused, as the victim said she would not be able to identify her attackers since the attack took place at night.
However, senior police officials had said that this would not impact the trial of the case.
